GMB hourly paid members working at Rangemaster Leamington Spa voted
by a large majority today for a shorter working week.
The GMB proposal, which is designed to avoid any compulsory redundancies, came about after the company announced on
Friday 5th December that they intended to make 80 employees redundant.
The proposal had to be negotiated under very tight time lines due to the fact that 11days of the 30 days consultation
period were automatically lost because the consultation period fell over the Christmas Shutdown. This short-time working agreement will last for a maximum of 6 months, with workers losing 5 hours pay
a week.
Mohammed Khalik, GMB fulltime Official said “The result of this ballot clearly demonstrates the unity of GMB
members at Rangemaster and their willingness to sacrifice a proportion of their wages over a possible 6 month period to help
avoid any of their fellow colleagues being made redundant. This vote also demonstrates
that GMB members are willing to help the company through this very serious global economic recession. I would also like to thank the Convenor and the Shop Stewards Committee for all their hard work in getting
this proposal to a ballot in such a short time frame”
