GMB Birmingham & West Midlands Region

Press Release - 26/09/07

£53.6 MILLION OF UNCOLLECTED COUNCIL TAX IN 34 WEST MIDLANDS COUNCILS.

GMB calls on Labour Party Conference to support changes in the law to help councils collect all monies to improve services

A new analysis by GMB, public services union, shows that 34 West Midlands councils were unable to collect a total of £53,645,000 in council tax in the financial year 2005/6. The uncollected council tax for the 34 councils in the previous year amounted to £50,002,000. This shows a rise in the amount uncollected in the region as a whole of £3,643,000.

Sandwell tops the West Midlands league as the most improved council with a drop in the amount of uncollected council tax of £1.11 million. The next most improved councils were Stoke-on-Trent, followed by Rugby and Telford & Wrekin.

There were 16 councils in the region where there was an increase in the amount uncollected. At the top of this list were Birmingham (£14.8 million uncollected), Stafford (£1.9 million uncollected) and Walsall (£3.1 million uncollected). The other councils were Nuneaton & Bedworth, North Shropshire, Redditch, Dudley, South Staffordshire, Wolverhampton, Bromsgrove, Shrewsbury & Atcham, Staffordshire Moorlands, Stratford-on-Avon, Warwick, Herefordshire, Bridgnorth.
