At the outset of an equal pay hearing at Birmingham Employment Tribunal today, Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council conceded that bonuses of at least 74% of basic pay paid to male manual workers for many years cannot be justified.

In January this year Birmingham City Council threatened the loss of 1,300 jobs when they issued a Section 188 notice of risk of redundancy. This was accompanied with a proposal to close all Community Day Nurseries, the Youth Service and Commissioning across the city.

Birmingham City Council announcement to axe 2000 jobs today is devastating for the city, as it plans to make savings of up to £69m by April 2011.  

The GMB are very concerned that Birmingham City Council has now chose to do it’s negotiating through the media. There have been no discussions concerning pay freezes linked to the previously announced redundancies.

Birmingham City Council announcement to axe 1291 jobs is devastating for the city, as it plans to make huge savings of 27.7 million. The council's plans are to make cuts in children's services which will affect mainly community day nurseries and youth services across the city.
