The particular strength of a general union is that it gives any workers in any industry, however large or small, the combined support of all its members in all industries and services. Union members enjoy better terms and conditions of employment than non-union members and can feel safe in the knowledge that they’re part of a national network of over 700,000 members. GMB’s purpose is to improve the quality of life of our members and their families. We actively encourage and support members wishing to pursue further education or develop their skills locally and also have a national college, based in Manchester, offering a wide range of courses. The GMB provides advice and guidance on employment law, equal rights, pensions, Human Resource Management, pensions and terms and conditions. Members are supported by shop stewards, local representatives and full-time officials who negotiate, represent, listen and advise on our members’ behalf. Through GMB and its solicitors, members recover millions of pounds in compensation – a staggering £3,416,477 has been awarded to Birmingham and West Midlands regional members in personal injury compensation and equal rights, equal pay rights between January and June 2002 alone. we specialise in equal pay rights for more on equal pay rights, trade union and equal rights click the relevant link: trade union click here for more on equal pay rights equal rights and trade union west midlands

Martin Bevan is the Regional Equal Rights Officer and is based at the Regional office. He works closely with GMB's Head of Equal Rights, Karen Constantine, to fight against discrimination on the grounds of disability, age and sexual orientation.

Around 40% of our members are women and the GMB has long been at the forefront of the campaign for equal pay and equality at work. We aim to put equal rights, and in particular equal pay, at the top of the negotiating agenda.

The Regional Equal Rights Advisory Committee advises on Union equal rights policy and liaises with the Regional Race Committee. The Birmingham and West Midlands Region recently hosted a successful joint RERAC and RRAC conference and it is hoped to combine them again in the future. The committees advise on recruitment and participation of women and other groups which experience discrimination.

Further information on equal rights issues and documents can be found on the GMB National Website

The GMB recently hosted a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) networking weekend at the National College in Manchester. The course focused on the introduction of Article 13, which will ensure the right to protection against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation when it is introduced into UK domestic law in December 2003. Delegates also discussed the importance of raising LGBT issues in all GMB workplaces. With 1 in 10 people belonging to the LGBT community, there is much that the GMB can do to provide support in the workplace. There will be three national network meetings at the National College in 2003, which will be informal, fun and supportive as well as including a training element. The Birmingham and West Midlands Region is currently establishing a regional LGBT forum. If you are interested in further information, please contact Martin Bevan on 0121 550 4888 or email him. Information is also available from Tony Hiughes.
