PUBLIC
SECTOR PENSION DAY OF ACTION!
GMB MEMBERS VOTED IN FAVOUR
OF STRIKE ACTION.
GMB MEMBERS VOTED BY 4 TO 1 MAJORITY IN FAVOUR OF STRIKE ACTION ON PENSIONS,
WHICH LED TO ONE OF THE BIGGEST WALKOUTS SINCE THE GENERAL STRIKE IN 1926
"It's not too
late for the government to pull back from any further confrontation and scrap attacks on pensions," says GMB. GMB
members working in local government, the NHS and the civil service across England and Wales have voted by more than 4
to 1 in favour of strike action on 30 November to defend their pensions. Turnout was 33% across all GMB members balloted
in the many thousands of employers across UK.
GMB members resoundingly said “Yes” to strike action and “No”
to the government’s raid on their pensions. It was clear that millions of workers protested
on November 30th at the Government’s attack on jobs and pensions. The government have already accepted that
the original proposals were unfair and wrong. It's still not too late for the government to pull back from any
further confrontation and scrap this attack on pensions.
GMB
does not believe public sector schemes are unsustainable and repeated evidence from the Office for Budget Responsibility,
National Audit Office, Public Accounts Committee and even Lord Hutton’s Report into the future of pension provision
in the public sector demonstrates that the reforms agreed less than five years ago have put schemes on an affordable and manageable
footing. There is no crisis in public sector pensions and no need for imposed, radical cuts to members’ pension savings.
The Civil Service trade unions believe that these excessive cuts will cause many people currently saving for
retirement to lose confidence in pensions and opt out of schemes. This will lead to poverty in retirement for them and higher
tax for everyone.
